Montecitorio
The palaces of the Chamber of Deputies
From 1870 the Italian Chamber of Deputies has had its seat in Palazzo Montecitorio, a building rich in history and works of art. Actually the deputies work out of many of the surrounding buildings and offices.
In the last twenty years the Chamber has spread out around the historical center, purchasing various state properties and restoring them for use by the deputies, the city authorities and citizens. Today the Chamber of Deputies, together with the Senate, constitute a veritable parliamentary city in the heart of historical Rome. And it is open to the public: every day more than 5000 people, including deputies, employees, journalists, scholars and visitors enter the main building..
The Parliamentary City
The parliamentary city of the Chamber of Deputies includes numerous offices adjacent to Montecitorio: parliament groups meet on the premises of Via degli Uffici del Vicario; the complex in Via del Seminario is the seat of the Bicameral Committees, the Historical Archive and Library; the monumental complex with the Convention Center, is on the narrow via Vicolo Valdina; Palazzo Theodoli-Bianchelli, once an office building is now used as a Parliamentary Information Center; the building known as Banco di Napoli, once an old credit institute, hosts the administrative offices while in Palazzo Marini we can find cafeteria services, a conference room, and the majority of the deputies’ offices.
Montecitorio with open doors
Being institutional offices, the palaces of the Chamber of Deputies are open to the public and, compatibly with parliament sittings, down the years they have become a venue for important artistic and cultural events.
Every first Sunday of the month 'Montecitorio a porte aperte' or 'Montecitorio with open doors' offers citizens a chance to visit Montecitorio, the hall and the main representative halls, and to admire the numerous works of art that are conserved here.
Every year the House hosts about one hundred thousand students who come to visit from all over Italy. For high school classes who come to do research and learn about the Parliament, the House allows them to spend an entire day at Montecitorio, assisting at hearings, discussing topics regarding their research with the deputies, and getting involved in organizational activities on Internet and in the library.
With the aim creating a rapport between the parliamentary institutions and citizens, the House organizes exhibitions, conventions, debates, book presentations, theatrical or literary recitals, and classical music concerts as well as the military band concerts which are performed regularly in Piazza Montecitorio.
