Hotel Rome Nazionale - History of the Hotel
Montecitorio Italian Parliamente

The latter, a long stele of pink granite was originally raised in Heliopolis to commemorate the victory of Pharao Psammetic II (594-589 B.C.) over the Ethiopians and, once in Rome, it was placed in Piazza S. Lorenzo in Lucina as a gnomon of a colossal sundial. After falling, because of a fire, it was buried up to the end of the 16th century when the extraction started. In 1792, it was finally crowned by a bronze globe with the emblems of Pope Pious VI (1775-1799), it was raised in the present site by the architect Giovanni Antinori, in the background of the scenic facade of Palazzo Montecitorio and in front of the building hosting Hotel Nazionale. But the element that mostly confers prestige to the Piazza is the building, since 1871 seat of the Chamber of Deputies, commissioned in 1650 to Bernini by Pope Innocenzo X (1644-1655), destined to his niece Olimpia Pamphili. After the intervention of Bernini, brusquely interrupted in 1654, followed a second intervention, by the wishes of Innocenzo XII (destined to Courts with the name of Curia Innocenziana) directed by Carlo Fontana. Even more prestigious by the eminent context in which it is inserted, Hotel Nazionale shows essential and elegant architectural forms, on three levels and two mezzanines with simple windows with architrave. Since the beginning, it has been the witness and the protagonist of the prestigious Hotel tradition that made the Trident famous, that is, the area crossed by crowds of travelers and animated by some of the most famous inns of the city. The same prestige, perpetuated through centuries, characterizes still today this refined and functional Hotel, that hosts international customers.
