Rome has been the set chosen for hundreds of films, Italian and foreign alike.
Here are just a few sites from some great films, with special attention to those closest to our hotel.
Starting off at the famed Piazza Navona, who could forget the Sofia Loren's famous striptease in the film "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow"? Mara, a beautiful prostitute who lives in a topfloor apartment on Piazza Navona turns the heads both of Mastroianni and a young man from a neighboring terrace, who wants to become a priest and is ready to give up his calling for her!
The scene was even recreated by Robert Altman in "PrêtàPorter" with the same actors but a different ending (Mastroianni falls asleep).
Coming closer to the present, Piazza Navona was chosen for the opening scene of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" by Anthony Mingella, in which Matt Damon is hired by an American millionaire to fetch his son, played by Jude Law, back to the U.S.
And, of course, there are two movies that have immortalized Rome in everyone's imaginations.
In "Roman Holiday", Audrey Hepburn, as a princess, and Gregory Peck, as a journalist, have a brief, intense love story. No one could forget the scene with the "Mouth of Truth" or their Vespa rides through Rome at its finest.
And then Fellini's "La Dolce Vita", in which a journalist, Marcello (Mastroianni), wanders through nightclubs and grand hotels, sometimes with his colleague, the photographer Paparazzo (the film is credited with making the word paparazzi known worldwide!) and Anita Ekberg, who in the film's best known scene, decides to take a dip in the Trevi Fountain.
We had to wait until 2013 to see such a grand tribute to Rome, when Paolo Sorrentino's "The Great Beauty" came to theaters, winner of the Oscar, with shots in enchanting settings like the grand fountain in the Janiculum, a penthouse with a view of the Coliseum, and the Aqueduct Park.
A few international directors have also recently forayed into Rome's beauty, such as Woody Allen in "To Rome with Love", Ron Howard in "Angels and Demons", and the latest installment of James Bond, "Spectre" with Daniel Craig taking thrilling car chases between the Colosseum, along the Tiber (bringing a whole new meaning to riverside road), and St. Peter's.
