In May, tennis fans the world over turn their eyes to the Foro Italico, a magnificent example of early 19th-century rationalist architecture. The Foro is a special place and is worth getting to know both for its history and for the many cultural and sports events that take place there.

The forum opened in 1932, in the midst of the fascist regime, and was first named Foro Mussolini. It was later expanded for the Olympic Games in Rome. To give it a look of grandeur, enormous amounts of white marble and granite blocks were used, and majestic monuments were built like the 17-meter obelisk dedicated to Benito Mussolini.

The Foro Italico includes:

Built in the 1950s and renovated in 1990 for the Football World Cup, it has a capacity of up to 70,000 people. Serie A games are played here both for the Lazio and Rome soccer teams, and many concerts are put on here too.

The Stadio dei Marmi (Stadium of Marble) has an athletic track.

It's hard to miss with its 60 statues of (nude!) athletes in marble, gifts from other Italian cities. Each athlete represents a different sport.
